SHEPHERDS BUSH GREEN - Background

From May to December 2002 work will be carried out on the roadways around the Green. The pavements will be widened on the West and South side, narrowing the roadway. The junctions will be altered.

The number of cars wishing to pass through the Green may increase as Chelsfield's WhiteCity and the W12 Centre on the other side of the Green come on-line.

There are other changes in the pipeline. The Southern Interchange is to be built betwen the present Central line station and the roundabout. [This is a large bus station / interchange with tube and a new rail station on the Olympia line]. Completion about 2004? This will introduce an large number of bus movements crossing from the interchange on the northern side to bus stops on the southern side of the Green.

There is also the "intermediate solution" aka the tram. This will presumably take over the North side of the Green, which may then become Public Transport only.

Into this we hope to have safe routes for a more than a four-fold increase in cyclists.

We are especially concerned about the provision of safe facilities for cyclists travelling both ways between the Green and going over the roundabout.
And also that the junctions are designed so that they are capable of handling the future volume of cycle traffic.

A key congestion point will the narrowed buslanes at the bus stops conflicting with traffic turning left into Rockley rd.

SHEPHERDS BUSH GREEN - The Plans

In the spring of 2001 we were involved in discussions with the LBHF engineers and the architects Ian Ritchie. We went to a site visit and made many suggestions.

In May 2002 at a meeting with the engineer Mike Gilroy we made some further suggestions to the plans below. Mike explained that the junctions had been changed to avoid pedestrian / cyclist conflict. Wide pedestrian crossings had been put in. We looked at the various junctions and made suggestions. These mainly concerned the space given to cyclists on islands.

At the Uxbridge rd junction we hoped that a cycle lane could go right round the corner into Uxbridge rd [going west] and that confusion over whether the roadway held 1 or 2 lanes of traffic could be clarified so that it was 1 lane. John r felt that an advanced stop lane for right turning traffic [coming up from Hammersmith] encouraged cyclists to use this dangerous route. It was felt that if cyclists chose to go that way, then it did no harm.

At the Goldhawk rd junction we hoped that the provision for cyclists going south from the Common could be improved.

At the Rockley rd junction Mike said a refuge could be put in before the crossing to aid cyclists going to the Common.

In front of the W12 Centre there is a lot of crossing traffic with buses crossing to the bus stops. It is difficult to put a cycle lane there. John g had drawn up plans for a stream lined flow which had bus stops on an island next to the Common. This would allow for a safe cycle lane in this area.

We would like to see an overall strategic plan for cycling covering the roadways, the Green, and the roundabout. [The roundabout belongs to TfL]. The roundabout could be improved for cyclists going east by having an advanced stop line for cyclists at the brow of the rise. Also reservoirs could be put in part way around.

The present plans, which we hope will be amended, are given below. Note they are copyright of Ian Ritchie or LBHF.

Below - Desire lines according to the architects Ian Ritchie. Diagram produced in September 2001. Drawing number SK 069.

Note:

They do not want eastbound cyclists to go onto the roundabout, only into the WhiteCity.

Below - NW corner - Wood Lane is at the top left.

Note:

There is no provision for cyclists to go towards the roundabout, as indicated in the architect's proposed cycle provision.

Will these elegant narrow lanes on the islands accept the numbers of cyclists expected to be using them. Especially in the evening rush hour, and with a more than 4x growth in cycling expected in10 years time.

Below - SW corner - Goldhawk rd is at the bottom, Shepherds Bush rd is on the right. [you have to lean your head to the left to see it as you would expect]

Note:

From Shepherds Bush rd the cycle lane should carry through junction, even if this is against normal practice, but indicated in the architect's proposed provision.

There is no right turn from Goldhawk Rd going to Shepherds Bush rd going south

There is no access the from the Green to Shepherds Bush rd going south as in the architect's proposed provision.

Have the designers thought about the numbers of cyclists these islands are meant to cater for?

Below - Rockley rd junction.

Note:

What about cyclists coming from the roundabout? What about a refuge for cyclists from the roundabout wishing to cross to the Green. What about cyclists wanting to go straight ahead. All of these are given in the architect's proposed cycle provision given above.

Below - The area in front of the West12 Centre - a sketch for a possible layout for bus stops on an island after the southern interchange is put in. This will allow a streamlined flow and provide a protected passage for cyclists.
