PLANNING FOR EVENTS

List of upcoming events

5 June BBC Environment Day, we have a stand there.

13 June Don't choke London - organised by LBHF. We have a stand there on Friday in Jerdan Place. 11am to 4pm. Please help on the day if you can.

Bike Week [14 - 22 June],

14 June 8pm Barbecue on the Beach in front of the Royal Festival Hall. Chris and John to take stuff down there.

15 June Ride to Camden BikeFest, Meet local cyclists at 12.30pm at
Holland Park café [in the park, note café may be shut for rebuilding], before setting off at 1pm. Chris will lead this.

18 June Bike to Work breakfast at the town Hall organised and hosted by LBHF. We will have a presence there. Hopefully the budget will be doubled from last year. Simon has said that it is only intended for employees of the Council who cycle to work, but Louanne says she will go along anyway.

22 June WEST LONDON GREEN FESTIVAL - OUR BIG EVENT IN BISHOPS PARK. Environmental showcase - mass picnic with music making - get back on a bike cycling promotion -tree walks - exploring foreshore - kids activities.
12noon to 5pm.

John said that so far the organising had mainly been done Chris and himself from this group, Susie and Roger from Wandsworth LCC, David from Ealing LCC, Paula, Pam and Eugene from HFFoE. Stan Davies of the Parks Constabulary, and Ben Taylor have been very co-operative.

The image on the poster was ripped off from some kid from John Betts primary school. Louanne suggested we give the school and the William Morris society a poster. The design was completed by Chris and John. See it on our website.

[The term ripped off is quite appropriate, as John ripped the painting off the wall in the info centre to scan it. The headmistress at the school has given us permission to use it.]

John went through the list of possible groups coming to the event.

Concerning help on the day, Louanne conveniently on a plane to Berlin on the 22nd. Paul also away sunning himself somewhere, but says he will try and get some volunteers. Bill says he will help on the day, and that he would look after the marshals / stewards. Need a briefing session for stewards.

This event could significantly raise our profile, and it would be really good if more people from this group would become involved and be available to orchestrate the chaos on the day.

Concerning chaos, getting all the stall holders into the park, without them bringing vehicles into the park, will require some planning.

Louanne had a lovely map of trees in the grounds of Fulham Palace. John will blow this up and laminate some copies for the tree walks.

Louanne also had a detailed map of the park showing trees, which will be very useful for a site plan.

Chris and John have been discussing a press release, and where it should go. Chris sending out to press. The press release is as follows.

West London Green Festival

An event organised by hfcyclists, the local branch of the London Cycling Campaign as part of the BikeWeek 2003 celebrations.

In Bishops Park, Fulham, Sunday 22 June 2003, 12noon to 5pm. Everything is free.

Showcase for more than 20 local environmental groups that you can become involved in.

Mass picnic with music making. Bring your own instrument and play / sing along with others. Reminiscent of the 60's perhaps?

The River: From 3pm to 5pm when the tide is out.
Thames21 will be organising a cleanup of the foreshore including a Weirdest Litter Competition. They will have an archaeologist on hand from the Museum of London to identify the curios and treasures you find, and tell you about the history of the Thames. They will fit you out with wellies [adult size3 or larger] and gloves.
Thames Explorer Trust [River for Life] will help you look at the creatures that live on the foreshore and in the river.
[note: children to be accompanied by a supervising adult, children must be aged 7 or older for litter pickup, 5 or older for river for Life]

Planting zone: The local Friends of the Earth along with Fulham Palace Garden Centre will help you pot up little seedlings and cuttings to take away.

Create zone: Create a bit of art from the materials on hand. Perhaps make musical things and sculptures from recycled stuff.

Wastewatch will have calico shopping bags for you to decorate and use.

Alternative energy: pedal / solar powered things.

WalkWell - "Walking Your Way to Health" - are organising a walk beside the river at 2.30pm. Everyone is welcome to join in.

Tree walks in the magnificent grounds of Fulham Palace. This may be a collective gazing in awe and chat about leaves falling off in autumn and how do you wash the mulberry stains off your face and hands. Remote possibility that we may have someone who knows about trees on hand.

And we want to encourage lapsed cyclists to get back in the saddle. Local bike shops and the CTC will be supplying bikes so that you can prove to yourself that it is still a pleasure to cycle. [Adults only]

The London Cycling Campaign will be giving out the New Cycling Maps so cyclists can plan their journeys along recommended routes.

Bill and Paul announced that they have resigned from the management committee of Cycick, to avoid conflict of interest if Cycick develops things in the New Deals for Communities area.

Paul has been elected with the most votes to the board in the southern area of the NDC. Very high turnout for vote. He is a very important person.

OYbike about to be launched. hammersmithtoday news letter says OYbike hopes to have 40,000 bikes on the street. Optimism or a misprint?
