THE NEW YEARS MEETING

Happy New year. Tonight's meeting was mainly a social get together, with little business to be discussed.

HFCYCLISTS EMAIL LIST

Several people objected to the use of the hfcyclists email group to announce that David Cameron was holding a public meeting in Hammersmith, complaining that this constituted promoting the Conservative party. Others wrote emails to the group supporting this announcement, and six wrote directly to John supporting his stance.

John Griffiths notes that we a campaign group and should be aware of what is happening on the political front, be it local or national. If another figure of national significance was to appear in the borough that would also be announced.

All the people at tonight's meeting supported John making the announcement.

THE CLEANER AND GREENER SCRUTINY COMMITTEE

This is an opportunity to see local government at work and perhaps to comment on it.

There will be a discussion on the Mayor of London's draft Transport Strategy, at the next meeting of the Cleaner and Greener Scrutiny Committee, Wednesday 13 January, 6.30pm in the Courtyard Room at Hammersmith Town Hall. This item will not be on before 7pm.

The Mayors Transport Strategy is Agenda item 6, pp 99 - 108, with a presentation on the following pages.

The Councils response includes

Cycling: We welcome the Mayor's initiatives to increase cycling but
cycle superhighways should be implemented in consultation and
agreement with boroughs, not imposed on them. We note from TfL's
Transport for London Road Network Improvement Plan (TIP) that TfL
intend to install cycle facilities on the A4 footway between
Hammersmith gyratory and the Chiswick roundabout in 2011/12, but
would urge that this be brought forward to provide faster moving
cyclists with an alternative to the riverside path. TfL should join the
boroughs in pressurising the Department for Transport to allow "No
Entry" signs with "Except Cyclists" plates underneath. We support the
continued provision of cycle training, which will give cyclists the skills
and confidence to ride in traffic and reduce their propensity to ride on
footways. Most cyclists are younger males and efforts should be
focused on enabling more women, children and older people to cycle.

other issues-

Cycle routes, including installing one on the relatively unused
pavement on the south side of the A4 so as to deflect commuting
cyclists from the narrow and pedestrian-shared Thames Path. (see
above)

Policies for dealing with aggressive cyclists, particularly in shared
spaces with pedestrians.

HAMMERSMITH BRIDGE CLOSURES

Be pleased you have a bike.

http://www.lbhf.gov.uk/Directory/News/Bridge_set_for_weekend_closures.asp

Major road works to improve traffic congestion in the borough, particularly in Hammersmith, will begin on January 11.

Significant improvements on Hammersmith Bridge Road will include a new bus barrier and a toucan crossing, the pavement and road will be resurfaced and unnecessary street furniture will be removed.

Work will continue until March 2010, and the bridge will be closed to all traffic in both directions every weekend from January 23 until March 15. The first closure will be from 5am on Saturday January 23 to 5am on Monday January 25, with these same times applying each weekend.

The bridge will also be closed completely from Saturday February 13 to Monday February 22. However, pedestrians and cyclists will be able to cross the bridge during the works, and residents living on both sides of the bridge will still be able to access their properties. Diversions will be in place for buses using the bridge - 33, 72, 209, 283, 419, 485 and 609.
