POLICE AND CYCLING

Last month John had acted as an observer at a police exercise to stop cyclists in Lyric Square and Hammersmith Broadway. If the cyclist was not acting in a dangerous way the police spoke to the cyclists about how threatening it was to vulnerable pedestrians. Dave Kent, who is blind, also spoke to stopped cyclists about the vulnerability of the visually impaired. About 60 cyclists were stopped and 2 FPNs [£30 tickets] given out.

The police also used the opportunity to check on a cyclist they found suspicious, ie a young person riding a bike they could not afford. They said many crimes were carried out by young people on bikes.

Julie said that a 15 year old black youth, who lives close to her and once came to one of our meetings, was often stopped and searched while riding on the road.

We will invite a police officer involved in the program to our next meeting.

CYCLIST CASUALTY MAP
A map of cycling casualties in London over the last few years is available on line. This needs to be read with a bit of understanding. Not meant to scare you but you could use to plan a safer journey. Most of the accidents are on main roads, but these also have the most cycling traffic. And on a given road it is instructive to see how casualties are clustered along the Uxbidge rd near Shepherds Bush Green, and along the New Kings rd to the west of Parsons Green.

The map is based on an analysis by Ted Reilly of data from Department for Transport. Road Accident Statistics Branch, Road Accident Data, 2000-2008
