Notes of hfcyclists meeting, Wednesday 10 April, 7.30pm in the info centre

Present: John Griffiths, Louanne Tranchell, Chris Amies, Jane Knight, John Ryan, John Kenton, Chris Tranchell.

Apologies: Mark Alderton, Mo Morgan, Alex Forrest, Simon Franklin.

1 Louanne provided a cake and John g brought a few slices of banana bread. John g had bought a couple of bottles of wine and 2 cartons of orange juice from group funds [£7.80].

2 Shepherds Bush Green.

Simon Franklin, the Council's cycling officer, has told John g that he has had a meeting with the Sharon Durno. She is the Council's new engineer working with Mike Gilroy.

There is to be an internal Council planning meeting on SBG next week, after which a meeting will be organised including us and Transport for London. TfL, who own the Holland Park roundabout, would like to see Shepherds Bush Green as a glowing example of cycle planning from a land use perspective, and TfL includes the Centre of Excellence for Cycling.

So far most of the input into the design has been from the architects Ian Ritchie. This does not appear to have taken the convenience and safety of cyclists as a high priority. The cycle track avoiding the roundabout [also designed by Ian Ritchie] is unusable as it ends up in a pedestrian mess. Someone suggested that the architects should be made responsible for any injuries that result from their lack of concern for the safety of cyclists.

We looked at maps of the junctions and particularly discussed the region between the roundabout and Rockley rd. This part is very congested with crossing traffic. We talked about bus lanes being in the outside lane next to the Green. Bus stops would be on an island, like a continental tram stop. This would provide a streamlined flow for traffic. We noticed that on the Green there is a strip of pavement alongside this region that serves no purpose at all. This could be taken as the passing lane for the bus stops. We do not know about regulations concerning grabbing land from the Green. [John g was embarrassed that on one sheet he had produced a map on it that did not correspond with the text. Louanne noted that the maps of the junctions would be clearer if John had superimposed the names of roads on the drawings].

We decided to do a cycle count soon. A possible way to do this may be from the comfort of the Aroma café on the first floor of the West 12 centre.

John g has handed out a large number of our April newsletter to cyclists at SBG on the day before the meeting. This has produced a large number of hits on our website and an email from someone very interested in the Green, but unable to come to the meeting.

3 Hammersmith Broadway.

The co-operation and input over SBG should be helpful in advancing cycle facilities at the Broadway. There are now cycle lanes in Hammersmith rd leading to the Broadway. We speculated on what may happen there.

4 Alex Forrest has emailed me with an internal document setting out the planned provision of 79 new Sheffield stands. Part of this came from the survey that Jane, Chris Bainbridge and Kursheed carried out. This would be paid from last year's LCN budget. We studied this and Jane added a few other suggestions.

The list is mainly for isolated stands King st, Uxbridge rd, Goldhawk rd and Wood Lane. Other stands are planned for Rockley rd, Dalling rd, Bradmore Park rd, Aldensley rd, Brackenbury rd. Next year they will concentrate on the south of the Borough.

5 Our rides in the H&F festival 2002 were very enjoyable, though limited to a rather select few. Louanne apologised for missing out on the Saturday ride as she was called away at the last moment and ended up mopping the floors of the Emerald centre.

6 The video of cycle lanes that John Ryan and Jane have been recording. John R says that another recording session is needed. It then needs editing. It will end up as perhaps a five minute video. Louanne suggested that it could be shown at the Cycling Breakfast during Bike Week. John R said that the copyright would belong to him. He explained that it included police officers in uniform on bikes.

John Kenton said that when he produced work, he made it copyleft. This is a somewhat freer system of distribution, though still with some restrictions.

7 Posters. Jane will design posters for display in Bike shops, libraries, local butchers etc.

8 Jane will give John g the contact details of a recycled paper supplier, and has as follows-

[Evolve 100% recycled paper comes in 80, 90 or 100gsm weight - I prefer the 100gsm as it's obviously slightly heavier and therefore better when printing on both sides....which is good for FoE's newsletter.

EVOLVE BUSINESS 100gsm - 100%recycled is the paper I'd go for - it's milled locally (in Kent) by 'Local Paper for London' from waste paper collected in London. Try 'Premierpaper' first on 0345 210297 or 'AtoZsupplies' on 01245 398000 or 'Paperback' on 01708 759282- it should cost £15.45 + vat for 5 reams including delivery - so it's quite reasonable, usually 48 hours for delivery.

For more information about 'Local paper for London' and to receive a sample pack of their papers please call 020 84044884 or their website is www.bioregional.co.uk - but it's not been updated for a while and a lot of the links don't work.]

8 Grant moneys.

John has spoken to our treasurer Mark about our grants situation.

John will forward to Mark the application form for our annual grant from LCC Head Office. [probably for £189.20]

We have a £500 grant to be spent on festivals and promotion. So far John has spent £40.83 on cycle repair equipment in preparation for our mass festival rides. [In actuality the only repair carried out used a piece of found string to fix a rattling mudguard].

We should spend the rest of this grant in the next 3 months, or return what we have over.

After discussion at the meeting we decided to buy a Canon S750 colour bubble jet printer. The printer is advertised by Simply mail order at £172.73 [including vat]. Louanne suggested getting consumables and we agreed to spending about £100 on cartridges.

9 Chris Amies reported a strange phenomenon that he had witnessed. He saw a street cleaner throwing bottles into the road and breaking them in front of a mechanical sweeper. The mechanical sweeper did not pick up all the fragments. He has reported this to the council. It was suggested that the street sweeper's carts have bags for cans etc.

10 Next ride: meet for 10.30am departure outside the Rutland Pub, near Hammersmith Bridge. [On corner Upper Mall and Mall rd.]
Going for 1 hour ride to the Wetland centre in Barnes, pay to go in and see a duck, meet some cyclists from other groups and retire to pub in Barnes.

11 Next meeting: Wednesday 8 May, 7.30pm at info centre. PUT IN DIARY NOW please.
