King Street has undergone a major refurbishment.
It looks very nice. Some possible criticisms of the scheme concerning cyclists -
In the planning stage neither hfcyclists nor the Council's own transport policy group were involved. The scheme seems to have been fast tracked to be completed before the Council elections in May 2006.
The plans usurped the possibility of continuing the contraflow in King Street upto the gyratory. Such thinking was in the pipeline.
There could have been a cycle lane in the new scheme. As it is cyclists often have to use the pavement to get past blocked traffic.
In King street there were
49 cycle stands before the works, and there will 57 when finished. One
problem is that the length of railings available for cycle parking is
considerably reduced. The result may be that it will be difficult to park
your bike close to where you are going.
