The junction is not yet completely finished [as of 6 October 2003]. The Pedestrian crossing on the east side of the junction across the traffic coming from Holland Park roundabout is not operational. Work on the Green itself is not yet finished. In spite of this some observations have been made.

In the morning most cyclists using the crossings or doing unauthorised manoeuvres are coming from Goldhawk rd. In the evening it is cyclists coming from the Green.

In this diagram Goldhawk rd is at the bottom. Unauthorised routes taken by cyclists are shown in red.

Diagram used for doing cycle counts.
A mark is put on a line for each cycle

passing through the junction.

The quality of the implementation on the main islands is very good.

3
Coming from Shepherds bush rd there is no legal route to get to the Green. Some cyclists use the pedestrian areas of the islands [route h].

4
There is no facility for cyclists coming from Goldhawk rd to turn right into Shepherds bush rd. As a result cyclists either use the pedestrian areas of the islands, or else use the pedestrian crossing of Goldhawk rd and then cycle on the pavement [d,e].

Has it really improved facilities for cyclists?

Compare these crossings to those at
Park Lane and Hyde Park Corner.

One of our members, Andrew Curry, has criticised the cycle crossing [b] from Goldhawk rd to the Green as being dangerous. It is narrow and there are several abrupt changes of direction.

He points out that there is a large number of hazards and street furniture on either side of the crossing. In the dark this could be a nightmare.

There is only room for one or two cyclists to use the reservoir on the last island. You are close to fast moving traffic coming round a corner.

Observations show some cyclists use this crossing and others prefer to use the more spacious pedestrian crossing [c]. There are very few pedestrians using the pedestrian crossing. There is no conflict with pedestrians on the pedestrian area as it is so large.

Some pedestrians chose to use the cycle crossing as it is more direct for them. There may be conflict here as the space is so limited.

Coming from the Green, crossing the traffic coming from Holland Park roundabout [m, m*, l]

The cycle crossings are controlled by buttons in a very complex way. This to keep the crossings closed unless a button is pushed. This is presumably to allow as great a flow of general traffic as possible into the lanes going towards Hammersmith and going towards Wood Lane. Cyclists might prefer an assured phase.

Some cyclists going towards Hammersmith use an unofficial route [m*] through a gap to avoid using the official route through the island [m].

The reservoir on the island [m] for cyclists heading towards Hammersmith is only 1.25m long. A bike is typically 1.75m in length.

When the green light for cyclists shows, the cycle lanes [m, l] are often blocked by traffic waiting at a red light. This is the traffic that would be heading towards the Goldhawk rd, or going around the corner.
